
HARRISBURG, NC — A deadly shooting in the Providence Manor neighborhood on January 13, 2025, has left a 43-year-old woman dead and the suspected gunman, 47-year-old Willie Wimbley, deceased in an apparent murder-suicide. Authorities confirmed that the victim was Chartara Courtney, a Harrisburg resident who had previously been in a relationship with Wimbley.
Cabarrus County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call just after 5 p.m. reporting a dispute in the neighborhood. Upon arriving, deputies witnessed Wimbley fatally shooting Courtney in the driveway of a home. Deputies reported that Wimbley then turned his weapon on them, firing multiple rounds. In response, deputies returned fire and called for backup from the Concord Police Department.
Wimbley was pronounced dead at the scene. While investigators believe he took his own life, an official determination is pending. Both the victim and the suspect’s families have been notified, and the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office has launched a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
