
A tragic incident in Wayne County has resulted in the death of a juvenile, which authorities believe was caused by an accidental shooting.
The West Virginia State Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred while the victim was inside a vehicle with two other individuals.
According to investigators, three individuals were in the car when one of them began displaying a firearm.
While the person was reportedly “showing off” the weapon, it discharged, striking the juvenile in the abdomen.
The juvenile was rushed toward medical assistance but tragically succumbed to the injury en route to the hospital.
State troopers confirmed the juvenile’s death on Tuesday.
No charges have been filed as of now, though the investigation remains ongoing.
Wayne County Schools identified the victim as a student at Wayne High School and issued a public statement on Tuesday expressing condolences:
“Wayne County School Administrators were notified by law enforcement that a student at Wayne High School has passed away from an accident overnight. Our prayers are for the family and friends of the student. The District’s Support Team is coordinating with Wayne High School for appropriate supports for staff and students. Wayne County Schools are currently on Spring Break and students return to school on Monday.”
Authorities have not released the names or ages of those involved.
The West Virginia State Police continue to gather details and have not ruled out the possibility of future charges pending the outcome of the investigation.
