An Arizona family is grappling with the heartbreaking loss of 22-year-old Tyrone Wilson, who died earlier this week in a tragic fall at a construction site. His mother, Latoya Cheney, shared her anguish, saying, “Words can’t describe how I feel right now. I still think he’s at work, but knowing that he’s gone… It’s really tearing me apart and tearing his siblings apart, his dad.”
Wilson was an ambitious young man working as an ironworker, rodbuster, and carpenter at the VAI Resort construction site near State Farm Stadium. Early Monday morning, around the start of his 3 a.m. shift, he fell approximately six stories, according to police reports. The circumstances of the fall remain under investigation by the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ADOSH), which is examining whether safety violations occurred at the worksite.
Latoya Cheney reflected on her son’s dedication to his craft, describing him as hardworking and determined. “He chose the hardest job and wanted to be an ironworker. Then he wanted to be a journeyman. He wanted to show us how strong and proud he was to work that hard, tough job,” she said. The VAI Resort, where Wilson worked, is set to become Arizona’s largest resort.
The ongoing ADOSH investigation, which could take up to five months, aims to uncover the details of the accident and ensure compliance with workplace safety standards. Fisher Industries, the company overseeing the project, extended condolences to Wilson’s family. Chief Business Officer Todd Mack stated, “Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of the individual involved. At this time, we cannot comment further until we receive the results of the in-progress investigation.”
To honor Wilson and help cover funeral expenses, his family has launched a GoFundMe campaign. Cheney emphasized the importance of giving her son a dignified farewell. “He deserves everything we can give him right now,” she said. The fundraiser has drawn support from the community, which has rallied around the family during this devastating time.
Wilson’s death underscores the inherent risks of the construction industry, especially in demanding roles like ironworking. As his family and friends mourn, they hope the investigation’s findings will bring clarity and lead to enhanced safety measures to prevent similar tragedies.
For now, Wilson’s loved ones are focused on preserving his memory and honoring his drive, strength, and passion for his work. His legacy serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by workers in hazardous professions and the importance of prioritizing safety on construction sites.
