Laredo, TX – A devastating two-vehicle crash claimed the lives of two men on Sunday, December 22, just north of Laredo on Interstate 35. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has released preliminary details about the fatal collision, which occurred around 8 p.m. near mile marker 24, roughly 11 miles outside the Laredo city limits in Webb County.
The crash involved a black 2012 Audi SUV traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-35. The Audi collided head-on with a gray 2014 Mazda traveling in the correct direction. The impact was severe, resulting in the deaths of both drivers.
The driver of the Mazda, 32-year-old Teofilo Ivan Granada, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Audi, 28-year-old Carlos Andres Jaime, was transported to a Laredo hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. DPS investigators are working to uncover the circumstances that led to the tragic collision.
At this time, it remains unclear why the Audi was traveling the wrong way on the interstate. Authorities are examining potential contributing factors such as road conditions, driver impairment, and weather. DPS has urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward to aid in their ongoing investigation.
This tragedy has left the community in mourning, as both families grapple with the sudden loss of their loved ones. Wrong-way driving incidents, like this one, highlight the importance of vigilance and adherence to traffic laws to prevent such catastrophic outcomes.
As DPS finalizes its investigation, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by wrong-way driving. The loss of Teofilo Ivan Granada and Carlos Andres Jaime underscores the need for increased awareness and safety measures on Texas roads to protect lives and prevent future tragedies.
