A Cook County sheriff’s deputy was tragically killed in a double homicide while vacationing in the Turks and Caicos Islands on the night of January 18, 2024. The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. near a popular restaurant on Grace Bay Road, a bustling area frequented by locals and tourists alike.
The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force responded to reports of gunfire near a bar on Grace Bay Road. Upon arrival, officers found three individuals who had been shot. Two victims, including 50-year-old Shamone Duncan, a 20-year veteran of the Cook County Department of Corrections, succumbed to their injuries. Duncan was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second victim, 30-year-old local resident Dario Stubbs, died at the hospital. A third victim, a 29-year-old man, was injured and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Duncan and the other victims were not the intended targets of the attack. Authorities have yet to determine a motive for the shooting, but the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force has assured the public of their dedication to bringing the perpetrators to justice. “We condemn this violence and will remain resolute in our pursuit of the person(s) responsible for this despicable act,” the police force stated.
The Cook County Sheriff’s Office released a heartfelt statement mourning Duncan’s loss. “Our hearts are broken for the family of Deputy Shamone Duncan,” the statement read. “She was a dedicated professional who served her community for 20 years and was currently assigned to Cermak Health Services.” The sheriff’s office is providing support to Duncan’s family and colleagues as they navigate this tragic loss.
Authorities in Turks and Caicos are calling on witnesses to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation. They have urged individuals who may have seen or recorded anything suspicious in the area to share their accounts, videos, or any other relevant evidence anonymously through Crime Stoppers or the Serious Crime Unit.
The deaths of Shamone Duncan and Dario Stubbs have left their communities grieving. As the investigation continues, the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force remains steadfast in their efforts to ensure justice is served for the victims and their families.
