The Martins Ferry Police Department has identified the victims of a tragic shooting on Sunday that left two people dead and one critically injured. Chief Jerry Murphy confirmed the deceased as Richard Haldeman and Jennifer Meeker, while Scott Meeker, who survived the incident, is recovering from a gunshot wound at WVU Medicine Ruby Memorial Hospital.
The shooting occurred at a residence on West Vine Street. Police were alerted when Scott Meeker called 911, reporting that he and his ex-wife, Jennifer Meeker, had been shot by Haldeman. He also informed authorities that the shooter might still be in the house.
Responding officers Sgt. Vincent West and Officer Zachary Cole found Scott Meeker outside the home with injuries to his face. After moving him to safety, they entered the house and discovered Haldeman and Jennifer Meeker unconscious in the kitchen, with a firearm lying near Haldeman. Emergency responders transported all three to WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital, where Haldeman and Jennifer Meeker were pronounced dead.
The Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Belmont County Coroner’s Office are conducting a thorough investigation. Autopsies on the deceased are being performed by the Licking County Coroner’s Office. Authorities have not yet confirmed the motive or the events leading to the shooting but noted the proximity of the firearm to Haldeman as a key element of the inquiry.
Complicating the case is the connection between the victims. Scott and Jennifer Meeker, though divorced, were together at the residence, and Haldeman’s involvement remains unclear. Investigators are exploring whether the shooting stemmed from self-defense, retaliation, or another motive.
The incident has deeply shaken the close-knit Martins Ferry community. Residents are mourning the sudden loss while awaiting answers from the ongoing investigation. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing that even minor details could be critical in resolving the case.
Scott Meeker, now facing a challenging recovery, must also grapple with the emotional toll of the event. Surviving such violence often leaves lasting scars, and support will be essential as he navigates the aftermath.
The Martins Ferry Police Department has extended condolences to the families of the victims, vowing to uncover the truth. As the investigation progresses, the focus remains on understanding what led to the confrontation and ensuring justice for those affected.
