DeKalb County, GA — The tragic death of 31-year-old Rafeeq Badee, a Lyft driver and security guard, has left the DeKalb County community mourning as police intensify their investigation into the fatal shooting.
Badee was killed on the evening of November 30 while working at the Parkway Grand Apartment Complex on Woodberry Place. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots around 7:30 p.m., followed by a man screaming. When officers arrived, they found Badee in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. Authorities later confirmed that his car had been stolen after the shooting.
According to Badee’s mother, LaGina Living, he had activated his Lyft app shortly before heading to his security job. It was common for him to combine his work as a driver with his security duties. Tragically, his shift that night ended in violence.
Late Thursday, police announced the arrest of 28-year-old David Grogan, who turned himself in at police headquarters. After being interviewed by homicide detectives, Grogan was charged with felony murder and armed robbery. He is currently being held in the DeKalb Jail. Authorities believe multiple individuals were involved in the crime and expect additional arrests as the investigation progresses. Witnesses reportedly saw several suspects fleeing the scene.
Badee’s family remembers him as a kind and hardworking individual. His mother expressed her heartbreak, stating, “I told him every time to be careful. He didn’t think this would happen, but it did. I never thought I’d have to explain his life because he’s supposed to outlive me.” Badee is survived by his mother and a younger brother.
Lyft issued a statement offering condolences to Badee’s family and pledged full cooperation with law enforcement. The company also confirmed that the rider Badee was picking up, whose identity has not been disclosed, has been permanently banned from the platform. The community continues to grieve the loss of a hardworking young man whose life was tragically cut short.
