GARDALE, AL — Phillip Don Ellis, an 85-year-old resident of Sumiton, was tragically killed in a single-vehicle accident on Tuesday, December 12. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed the incident occurred on Sardis Road near the intersection with Mount Olive Road.
According to officials, Ellis was a passenger in the vehicle, which veered off the roadway and struck a tree. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash was reported but were unable to save Ellis. He was pronounced dead at the site of the accident.
The driver of the vehicle, whose identity has not been released, reportedly sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities have not provided further details on the extent of the driver’s injuries or their current condition.
Investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash, but preliminary findings suggest that wet road conditions and low visibility might have been contributing factors. Sardis Road is a narrow, winding route, and accidents in the area have been noted in the past, especially during inclement weather.
This tragedy has left the local community mourning the loss of a longtime resident. Ellis was known as a kind and active member of the Sumiton community. Neighbors and friends have expressed their condolences to his family, remembering him fondly for his contributions and good-natured spirit.
The Gardendale Police Department is continuing its investigation into the incident. Authorities urge motorists to exercise caution, particularly in hazardous weather, to avoid similar accidents. Updates on the investigation, including possible charges or additional details about the driver, are expected in the coming days.
