Norfolk, VA – A tragic shooting near Old Dominion University (ODU) on Wednesday night has claimed the lives of two individuals, prompting an extensive investigation by Norfolk Police and ODU Police.
At approximately 9:50 p.m. on February 28, officers responded to reports of a shooting in Parking Lot 3 in the 1400 block of West 49th Street, near Broderick Dining Commons on the ODU campus.
Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims were later identified as 18-year-old Delanio M. Vick and 20-year-old Timothy G. Williams. Neither victim was a student nor affiliated with Old Dominion University.
Both individuals were transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.
Following the shooting, ODU issued an emergency alert at 10:01 p.m., urging students and faculty to shelter in place. Authorities initially reported a suspect at large, leading to heightened security measures on campus.
By 11:43 p.m., ODU police lifted the shelter-in-place order, confirming that there was no ongoing threat to the campus community. However, as of early Thursday morning, authorities had not disclosed whether a suspect had been taken into custody.
Norfolk Police Chief Mark Talbot expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the importance of maintaining campus safety:
“We are deeply saddened by the unnecessary violence that occurred overnight on the campus of Old Dominion University. Students attend a university to learn and deserve to feel safe in their environment while doing so. We appreciate the strong partnership we have with the men and women of the Old Dominion University Police Department and all of their assistance both last night at the scene and today as we investigate this double homicide.”
Chief Talbot also affirmed his commitment to ensuring justice, stating that he and ODU Police Chief Sheldon will continue to work closely to hold those responsible accountable.
In the wake of the tragedy, Joshua McCauley, Director and Campus Minister for the Wesley Foundation at ODU, shared his concerns over the impact on students:
“It’s disheartening for this to happen on our campus. I know there will be a lot of pain, worry, and anxiety among students. I’ve already been in contact with several students, checking in and ensuring they know Wesley is open as a safe space for them.”
