PHILADELPHIA, PA – A devastating act of gun violence claimed the life of a 17-year-old high school student, Noah Scurry, as he was leaving for school on the morning of January 14.
The shooting occurred around 7:15 a.m. in Philadelphia as Scurry, accompanied by his mother, was heading out for the day. Authorities reported that the teen was shot multiple times. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries at 7:40 a.m.
Scurry was a student at Samuel Fels High School and an active member of the boys’ basketball team. Known for his academic achievements, he had recently celebrated a high SAT score. In a heartfelt email shared with CBS Philadelphia, Principal Melissa Rasper expressed the profound grief felt by the school community, stating, “It’s difficult to process the loss of such a bright young life, especially amid the ongoing struggles with gun violence in our city.” Out of respect for Scurry’s memory, all boys’ basketball games for the week were canceled.
The School District of Philadelphia extended its condolences to Scurry’s family and friends while strongly condemning the pervasive gun violence plaguing the city. A district spokesperson emphasized the tragic and lasting impact these incidents have on the community, particularly its youth.
The Philadelphia Police Department has launched an active investigation into the shooting but has yet to make any arrests or recover the weapon used in the attack. Authorities are working to uncover further details and identify those responsible.
This tragic incident adds to the growing concern over the safety of children and teenagers in Philadelphia. Community leaders and residents are calling for urgent action to address the root causes of gun violence, which continues to claim young lives and devastate families.
As the investigation continues, the city mourns the loss of a promising student and athlete whose future was tragically cut short. Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact the Philadelphia Police Department to assist in bringing justice to Scurry’s grieving family.
