Authorities have identified the resident who died in a Newark residential fire on Thursday morning as a 44-year-old man.
Khalil Hardaway was pronounced dead at the scene, after firefighters attempted to save him, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.
Hardaway lived in the first-floor apartment of a multi-family home on the 200 block of South 11th Street where the fire started.
A pit bull also died in the fire.
The Red Cross assisted nine people from two other families with temporary lodging, food, clothing and other immediate needs.
“Our hearts are with those affected,” Red Cross New Jersey said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
