A Cleveland man, identified as 29-year-old Matthew Cooper, has died following a shooting in the city’s Detroit Shoreway neighborhood on Sunday afternoon. The incident unfolded near West 81st Street and Wakefield Avenue, leaving residents stunned and authorities investigating the tragic event.
According to Cleveland police, Cooper was shot at the initial location and then transported by a private vehicle to the 2300 block of West 11th Street in Tremont. Upon arrival, a 911 call was made, and Cooper was rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center. Tragically, he was pronounced dead shortly after.
When officers arrived in Tremont, they discovered a white Toyota SUV cordoned off as part of the crime scene. The vehicle’s left passenger door was open, and several personal belongings, including a pair of black sneakers and other clothing items, were scattered near the driver’s side door. Police blocked off the area to preserve evidence and continue their investigation.
The incident has left residents in Tremont shaken, as violent crimes are rare in the area. Local resident Rob Broka, who lives and works nearby, expressed his disbelief. “I’ve lived here since 2016, and I mean it’s a city, so obviously things happen, but something this close—there’s never been anything violent, at least in this neighborhood,” Broka said.
Authorities have not released any information about potential suspects or a motive for the shooting. Both the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood, where the initial shooting occurred, and Tremont, where Cooper was later found, remain on edge as the investigation continues.
Cleveland police are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward. Tips can be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers, and authorities are committed to ensuring a thorough and transparent investigation. Further updates are expected as detectives work to uncover the details behind this tragic event.
