The Henrico County Police and Fire Divisions were called to a tragic scene on Sunday, Nov. 24, when a cyclist was struck and killed by a train at a railroad crossing on Hungary Road near Oakview Avenue. The victim has been identified as 59-year-old Marcell Eugene Morse of Richmond.
At approximately 3:30 p.m., emergency personnel arrived at the location to find Morse suffering from severe trauma. He was pronounced dead at the scene by responding medical staff. Preliminary investigations suggest that Morse was riding his bicycle across the train tracks when the crossing arms were activated, indicating an approaching train. Unfortunately, Morse appeared to have lost his balance while attempting to cross and was struck by the oncoming train.
A man who was with Morse had already crossed the tracks on foot without any issues just before Morse attempted to ride through. This makes the circumstances of Morse’s death particularly puzzling. It seems that Morse’s unfortunate fall happened just as the train arrived at the crossing, leading to the fatal collision.
The Henrico County Police Department is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Investigators are seeking to piece together the details of what occurred in order to determine how this tragic accident could have happened. They are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.
Those who witnessed the crash or have any details that could help with the investigation are encouraged to contact Officer T. Holmes at the Henrico County Police Department at 804-501-5000. The community and authorities remain focused on understanding what led to this tragic loss of life.
