WEBSTER PARISH, LA — A devastating two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 371 on December 20 claimed the lives of 56-year-old LaMarcus Epps of Cullen, Louisiana, and 47-year-old Damiane Miles of Dallas, Texas. Louisiana State Police (LSP) responded to the scene at approximately 11:50 p.m.
According to investigators, Epps was driving a 2015 Cadillac Escalade northbound when his vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with a southbound 2011 GMC Sierra. Both Epps and Miles, a properly restrained front-seat passenger in the GMC, suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the GMC, who was also properly restrained, survived the crash with minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released the identity of the surviving driver.
While impairment is not currently suspected as a factor in the crash, standard toxicology tests have been submitted as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities are also examining potential contributing factors, including driver fatigue, distraction, and roadway conditions.
This tragic incident highlights the importance of seatbelt use and safe driving practices. LSP noted that while seatbelts cannot prevent every fatality, they significantly reduce the risk of severe injuries in crashes. In this case, Epps was not wearing a seatbelt, a factor that may have contributed to the severity of his injuries.
As the investigation continues, the loss of two lives during the holiday season has left families and the Webster Parish community mourning. This tragedy underscores the need for vigilance on the road, adherence to traffic laws, and collective efforts to improve road safety.
Authorities encourage drivers to remain cautious and responsible, emphasizing the life-saving impact of seatbelt use and attentive driving. They urge anyone with information about the collision to contact the Louisiana State Police.
