A tragic car accident early Saturday morning in Fairdale claimed the life of 14-year-old Keayland McKune. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed on Monday that McKune died at the scene due to blunt force injuries sustained in the crash.
According to Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) spokesperson Aaron Ellis, officers first encountered the vehicle involved in the incident around 3:50 a.m. near the Jefferson County line. The car, occupied by two teenagers, had been reported stolen. When police attempted a traffic stop, the driver accelerated and fled at a high speed.
While officers briefly activated their emergency lights and sirens, they quickly ceased pursuit to avoid escalating the situation. Shortly thereafter, officers observed sparks coming from the direction the vehicle had traveled. Upon investigation, they discovered an overturned car about half a mile away in the 10300 block of National Turnpike.
The vehicle, believed to be the same one that fled from police, had overturned, resulting in McKune’s death at the scene. A second teenager in the car sustained injuries that were not life-threatening and was transported to Norton Children’s Hospital for treatment.
Authorities confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the crash. The identity of the driver has not been disclosed, and the circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation. The LMPD Traffic Unit is spearheading efforts to determine the events that resulted in this devastating loss.
