BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot early Sunday morning at an apartment complex in Bowling Green, leading to the arrest of a 22-year-old man on murder charges.
The Bowling Green Police Department responded to reports of gunfire in the 100 block of Audley Avenue shortly after 1:45 a.m. on Sunday, January 26. Upon arrival, officers found 16-year-old Jamarco Dye lying dead in the backyard of the complex, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Police arrested Tylan J. Barnett, 22, in connection with the shooting. According to investigators, Barnett claimed he went to the apartment complex after his sister called him on Saturday evening, January 25. She reportedly suspected an earlier attempted break-in at her residence and sought his assistance.
Barnett told detectives that upon arriving at the scene, he saw two individuals near the apartment and assumed they were responsible for the suspected break-in. Armed with a gun, Barnett reportedly observed one person fleeing the area and fired multiple shots at the second individual, who was also running away. Police say Barnett later discarded the weapon in a brush line near the complex.
Following his arrest, Barnett was charged with murder and tampering with physical evidence. He is currently being held at the Warren County Regional Jail. Investigators are continuing to piece together the events leading up to the shooting and are working to determine whether Barnett’s actions were justified or excessive.
Authorities have not released additional details about the incident but are urging anyone with information to contact the Bowling Green Police Department at 270-393-4000. The tragedy has left the community shaken, as residents mourn the loss of a young life and await answers about the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
