BLOOMFIELD, CT — A routine football practice turned into a heartbreaking tragedy on Wednesday when 14-year-old Jahkye Gayle, a beloved member of the Bloomfield Junior Warhawks Football Team, collapsed during warmups and later passed away. Despite the swift actions of staff and emergency personnel, Jahkye could not be revived, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
Trevor Ford, president of the Junior Warhawks, recounted the tragic moment. “It was just like a walk-through, light jogging. Nothing strenuous,” Ford explained, highlighting the unexpected nature of Jahkye’s collapse. The cause of his sudden death remains unknown, adding to the grief felt by his family, teammates, and friends.
On Saturday night, hundreds gathered on the football field to honor Jahkye’s memory with an emotional vigil. Candlelight ceremonies and the release of balloons into the sky served as symbolic gestures of remembrance. Jahkye’s brother, Lamar, shared his sorrow: “It’s hard losing my brother, someone I shared everything with. He was a great person who changed people with his presence.”
Jahkye was a standout both on and off the field, known for his humor, dedication, and sportsmanship. His teammates, deeply affected by his passing, have vowed to dedicate the remainder of their season, including an upcoming national championship, to his memory. He was also set to receive a lifetime achievement award at the team’s banquet, further underscoring his impact.
His mother, Stacey Haylett, expressed her profound loss. “Jahkye was my youngest, my baby… I just don’t know what went wrong,” she said, echoing the sentiments of many who are grappling with the sudden loss. In response, Bloomfield’s school district has offered counseling services to students and staff to help them cope with the tragedy.
A GoFundMe campaign launched by the Bloomfield Jr. Warhawks has already raised over $8,500 to support Jahkye’s family with funeral expenses. The community has come together, offering generosity, prayers, and support to help the family during this difficult time. “His passion for life, warm smile, and unwavering spirit will remain in our hearts forever,” the campaign reads, capturing the collective grief and love felt by all who knew Jahkye.
