Federal authorities have arrested 18-year-old Gunner Joseph Fisher of Big Rock, Tennessee, for allegedly planning a mass shooting fueled by extremist ideologies. The FBI revealed that Fisher had been plotting the attack for years, as outlined in an affidavit filed by Special Agent Christopher R. Potts.
The investigation began after Meta Platforms, the parent company of Instagram, alerted authorities to alarming messages on Fisher’s account in December. The posts revealed his intent to commit mass violence, targeting specific racial and religious groups, including Jews, African Americans, and Muslims. Fisher’s online activity showcased admiration for mass shooters, disturbing rhetoric, and images of himself posing with firearms and tactical gear.
In one message, Fisher stated, “My entire school is gonna be wiped off the face of this EARTH.” He also expressed interest in attacking a local mosque in Nashville, inspired by Brenton Tarrant, the perpetrator of the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings in New Zealand. Investigators uncovered communications between Fisher and an unidentified individual discussing plans for mass violence.
During an interview with the FBI on December 14, Fisher admitted to his long-standing obsession with mass shootings. A search of his electronic devices revealed a video where he declared intentions to harm racial and religious minorities and a manifesto dated November 29, detailing his plans to use firearms and explosives at his school.
Fisher was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of communicating threats of mass violence. Prosecutors have argued that no conditions would ensure public safety if Fisher were released, seeking to keep him in custody without bond. The defense is expected to present evidence related to his mental health during a continued detention hearing on Tuesday.
The case has prompted increased security measures at local schools and counseling resources for affected families. Authorities continue to investigate Fisher’s online activities and communications to identify any potential collaborators.
Federal officials have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any information related to this case. Tips can be submitted anonymously through the FBI’s tip line, with assurances that measures are in place to prevent similar threats and protect the community.
