BRONX, NY — A 60-year-old man, identified by friends as Dwight Downer, tragically lost his life early Saturday morning after being struck by a car in a chaotic crash at the intersection of Eastchester and Givan roads. Authorities reported that the incident occurred shortly after midnight when Downer exited his parked vehicle.
According to witnesses, a tow truck reportedly ran a red light at Givan Avenue, colliding with a white BMW sedan. The impact caused the BMW to spin out of control, striking multiple parked vehicles along Eastchester Road before fatally hitting Downer. Emergency responders transported him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where he was pronounced dead.
The 24-year-old driver of the BMW remained at the scene and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Police confirmed that the driver was not visibly injured and no charges have been filed at this time. Authorities have not confirmed whether the tow truck driver involved in the initial collision remained at the scene, and details surrounding their involvement are still under investigation.
The tragic incident has left the community shocked and saddened, especially those who knew Downer. Friends described him as a kind and generous person who will be deeply missed. The crash has raised concerns about traffic safety and the dangers posed by vehicles disregarding traffic signals, particularly in busy urban areas.
As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident to come forward. No arrests have been made, and the authorities are working to determine the exact circumstances leading to this fatal accident.
