A single-vehicle crash in Tallapoosa County on Sunday night claimed the life of 36-year-old Derek Jonathan McVey, a resident of Alexander City, Alabama. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) confirmed that McVey was driving a 2016 Kia Sorento when the vehicle veered off the roadway under undetermined circumstances.
The crash occurred shortly before 9:00 p.m. near the intersection of Campground Road and Kodiak Lane, not far from McVey’s home. According to ALEA, the vehicle struck a fence, a mailbox, and several trees before overturning. Tragically, McVey, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.
Investigators are still working to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the road. No other vehicles were involved, and no additional injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
The lack of seat belt use was a contributing factor in the severity of McVey’s injuries. Authorities continue to emphasize the critical importance of wearing seat belts, which significantly reduce the risk of fatal injuries in car accidents.
Tallapoosa County, located in east-central Alabama, is home to over 41,000 residents, with Alexander City being its largest city. This tragedy has left the local community mourning the loss of McVey, described by acquaintances as a familiar face in the area.
As ALEA’s investigation continues, the agency is urging all drivers to exercise caution on the roads and prioritize safety measures, including the consistent use of seat belts. This incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a routine drive can turn into a devastating event.
McVey’s death is a heartbreaking loss for his family and the Alexander City community. Local residents are offering their support to his loved ones during this difficult time while awaiting further details from the ongoing investigation.
