HOUSTON — A man was shot and killed by a San Jacinto County sheriff’s deputy inside HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood Hospital on Monday night, according to the Houston Police Department.
It happened at the hospital along the Eastex Freeway at Kingwood Drive.
Police said a 34-year-old man was taken into custody on “numerous felony charges” and during his arrest, he was injured.
He was taken to the hospital for treatment where he was under constant supervision by San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office deputies, HPD officials said.
Just before 9 p.m., the suspect was returned to his room after a procedure. Once inside the room, the suspect asked the deputy to loosen up his leg restraints while he was still handcuffed with his hands in front of him, according to authorities.
According to HPD investigators, as the deputy was loosening the leg restraints, the suspect grabbed him and a fight broke out. The deputy hit the suspect several times with his baton while telling him to stop. The suspect didn’t stop and ended up falling on top of the deputy as they both went to the ground.
On the ground, the suspect reached for and grabbed the deputy’s gun, according to HPD officials. The deputy and suspect then fought to gain control of the firearm. The deputy ended up getting his gun back and opened fire on the suspect, hitting him several times.
Hospital medical staff responded to the room and tried to save the suspect’s life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim’s sister, Sherree Brooks, said her family is searching for answers. She identified her brother, Jarmar Brooks, as the suspect who was shot and killed.
