Louisiana State Police are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of 26-year-old Davonte Russ, a resident of Plaquemine. The incident occurred on Monday evening, December 31, on LA 1 near Saint Louis Road in Iberville Parish.
Authorities reported that the crash took place around 7:30 p.m. when Russ, riding his bicycle westbound, attempted to cross the highway. At the same time, a 2018 Ford Focus was traveling northbound on LA 1. Russ collided with the front of the vehicle as he crossed the road, resulting in a devastating impact.
Emergency responders quickly transported Russ to a nearby hospital for treatment. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries later that evening. The driver of the Ford Focus, who was wearing a seatbelt, was unharmed in the incident.
State Police conducted routine toxicology tests on both Russ and the driver, as part of standard procedure in such cases. However, the results of these tests have not yet been disclosed. Authorities have not identified any contributing factors, and the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing.
This tragic event highlights the dangers cyclists face when crossing high-traffic roadways, particularly highways like LA 1. Local authorities stress the importance of vigilance for both drivers and cyclists. Cyclists are encouraged to use marked crossings and reflective gear, especially when riding after dark, while drivers are reminded to stay alert and watch for vulnerable road users.
As the investigation continues, officials are urging the public to exercise caution and patience on roadways. This incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks inherent in sharing the road and the need for both motorists and cyclists to prioritize safety to prevent similar tragedies. Further updates on the investigation will be released as more information becomes available.
