The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed the identities of two pedestrians who tragically lost their lives after being struck by multiple vehicles while attempting to cross U.S. Highway 90 on the Southwest Side of San Antonio. The victims have been identified as 41-year-old Marie Cabotaje and 20-year-old David Stevens.
The fatal accident occurred just before 5 a.m. on Saturday in the 6600 block of eastbound U.S. Highway 90, near West Military Drive. According to officials, Cabotaje and Stevens were crossing the highway at a location where pedestrians were not permitted.
Both individuals were struck by vehicles traveling eastbound. The first vehicle hit both victims, and shortly after, a second eastbound vehicle collided with one of the pedestrians, striking them a second time. The impact caused fatal injuries: Cabotaje died from blunt force trauma, and Stevens succumbed to cranial cerebral injuries.
Both victims were found unresponsive at the scene and were pronounced dead by responding authorities. The drivers involved in the accidents remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement officials. Based on the available information, the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) has indicated that no charges are expected against the drivers.
This tragic incident highlights the significant risks pedestrians face when crossing roadways outside of designated pedestrian areas. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, but they stress the importance of adhering to traffic laws and pedestrian safety guidelines.
As the community mourns the loss of Cabotaje and Stevens, their tragic deaths serve as a reminder of the need for awareness and caution, both for pedestrians and drivers, when navigating busy roadways. Authorities are hopeful that the investigation will provide further insights into the incident and help prevent similar accidents in the future.
