BIRMINGHAM, AL – A woman accused of fatally shooting her ex-boyfriend on Monday evening has turned herself in to authorities, police confirmed. The victim, identified as 47-year-old Damian Dawson, was killed in a domestic-related shooting near the College Hills community. This marks Birmingham’s eighth homicide of 2025.
The incident occurred around 5:40 p.m. in the 100 block of Ninth Court West. Birmingham police responded to reports of a shooting and discovered Dawson lying in the driveway of a family member’s home with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders transported him to UAB Hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald stated that the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute involving Dawson and his ex-girlfriend, who fled the scene before officers arrived. Birmingham’s Real Time Crime Center worked with investigators to track the suspect, with community members providing key information to advance the case.
“The most powerful resource we have at this scene is community help and involvement,” Fitzgerald said, emphasizing the critical role of public cooperation in resolving the case. Before the suspect surrendered, police urged her to come forward, warning that it was only a matter of time before she would be found.
This tragic incident has highlighted ongoing concerns about domestic violence and rising homicide rates in Birmingham. According to police records, the city reported six homicides in January 2024, while Jefferson County has already recorded 13 homicides this year. The latest death has prompted renewed calls for community action and stronger support systems to address domestic violence.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and have asked anyone with additional information to contact Birmingham detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. As the investigation unfolds, the Birmingham Police Department and local residents are mourning the loss of Dawson and seeking justice for his family.
