HOOVER, AL – A domestic violence incident in Alabaster escalated into a fatal officer-involved shooting in Hoover late Tuesday night. Authorities confirmed that 44-year-old Christopher Grant Hulgan was shot and killed following a police pursuit and armed confrontation with law enforcement officers.
The incident began around 10:30 p.m. when Alabaster Police responded to a domestic violence call at a home in the 1800 block of Woodbrook Trail. Upon arrival, officers encountered Hulgan, who fled the scene in a vehicle, prompting a police chase. The pursuit continued until Hulgan crashed near Interstate 459 at Exit 13, close to the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover.
After the crash, Hulgan exited the vehicle armed with a firearm, according to police reports. As officers from both Alabaster and Hoover Police Departments approached, he allegedly pointed the weapon at them. In response, multiple officers fired their weapons, striking Hulgan. Emergency responders arrived shortly after and pronounced him dead at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident.
Following standard procedure, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) conducts an independent investigation. Authorities have not yet disclosed specific details regarding the initial domestic violence call or Hulgan’s actions leading up to the shooting.
The incident has raised concerns about the dangers of domestic violence cases, which are among the most unpredictable situations law enforcement officers face. Community members in Hoover and Alabaster are awaiting further details as the investigation unfolds, and the findings will be closely monitored by both the public and advocacy groups.
As law enforcement officials work to determine the full circumstances of the incident, the case highlights the ongoing challenges surrounding domestic violence, police response tactics, and public safety. Officials have assured the public that they will provide updates as more information becomes available.
