Erie police are actively investigating a shooting that resulted in the death of 17-year-old Armoni Cantu and left another 17-year-old male critically injured near West 31st and Liberty Streets on Tuesday afternoon. According to Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook, Cantu was transported to Saint Vincent Hospital by a private vehicle but was pronounced dead at 4:47 p.m. despite efforts to save him.
The second victim, also 17, sustained a severe gunshot wound to the face. Authorities have reported that his injuries are life-threatening, and he remains in critical condition. The shooting has shocked residents of the typically quiet neighborhood, where violent crime is rare. Vahid Ferhatovic, a long-time Erie resident, expressed disbelief at the event, noting that the area was once considered peaceful and safe. “I grew up right down the street from there, and I’ve never seen crime, never seen burglary,” Ferhatovic said.
At this time, no suspects have been taken into custody, but Erie police have executed multiple search warrants as part of their ongoing investigation. They are working to piece together the details surrounding the shooting and are urging anyone with information to come forward. Authorities have emphasized the importance of community cooperation in solving the case.
The tragedy has left the community grappling with the effects of gun violence in a neighborhood that has long been regarded as one of the safer areas in Erie. The incident serves as a reminder of the far-reaching consequences of violent crime, even in seemingly peaceful neighborhoods.
Law enforcement is asking anyone who may have information about the shooting to contact the Erie Police Department to assist in the investigation. As the community waits for answers, the focus remains on bringing those responsible to justice and ensuring the safety of the area moving forward.
