A tragic accident on Sunday night claimed the life of 64-year-old Arbadellia Richardson, who was struck by a vehicle while trying to warn drivers about a disabled truck on Interstate 40 in Nashville. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on the eastbound exit ramp to Old Hickory Boulevard and Central Pike.
The events began when a black Chevrolet 1500 became disabled on the exit ramp overpass after a crash, partially blocking the right lane. Unable to move the truck, the driver received assistance from a second vehicle that stopped at the scene. Richardson, a passenger in the assisting car, attempted to help by using her phone’s flashlight to signal oncoming drivers about the hazard ahead.
While she was positioned between the disabled Chevrolet and the assisting vehicle, Richardson was struck by an oncoming Toyota Corolla. The 25-year-old driver of the Corolla told police he did not see Richardson or the blocked lane in time to avoid the collision. Tragically, Richardson died at the scene from her injuries.
The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) reported no signs of impairment in the driver of the Corolla. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Summit Medical Center for treatment. Poor visibility and the sudden appearance of the blocked lane are suspected factors in the collision, which remains under investigation.
