KEY LARGO, FL — A 56-year-old woman lost her life during a diving accident off the coast of Key Largo on Tuesday morning. According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), the incident occurred near Molasses Reef, a well-known diving destination in the Florida Keys.
The victim, identified as Andrea Shultz of Tallahassee, was diving shortly after 10 a.m. when she suddenly lost consciousness in the water. Witnesses nearby immediately called for help, and rescuers worked quickly to bring Shultz back to shore. Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Adam Linhardt reported that emergency measures were initiated as soon as Shultz was pulled from the water.
Medics on the rescue vessel administered CPR in an effort to revive her while transporting her back to land. Despite their efforts, Shultz was pronounced dead upon arrival. Authorities have stated that no foul play is suspected at this time. An autopsy has been requested to determine the exact cause of death, which remains unknown pending further examination.
Molasses Reef is celebrated for its vibrant coral formations, clear waters, and diverse marine life, making it a popular spot for divers and snorkelers from around the world. While the reef is generally considered safe for recreational diving, this tragic accident underscores the potential risks of underwater activities, even in monitored and frequently visited locations.
The incident has left both the local diving community and Shultz’s family mourning her untimely death. Diving accidents in the area are rare, but officials remind divers to take precautions, including proper equipment checks, staying within skill limits, and monitoring their health while underwater. Safety remains a top priority for dive operators and officials in the Florida Keys.
As the investigation continues, authorities await the results of the autopsy to better understand the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The loss of Andrea Shultz has deeply affected her family, friends, and fellow divers, who remember her passion for underwater exploration. This event serves as a somber reminder of the importance of safety and vigilance during recreational diving activities.
