A tragic hit-and-run accident on Wednesday night in Del Norte County has claimed the life of a pedestrian, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Crescent City. The incident occurred near Northcrest Drive, close to East Madison Avenue, as the pedestrian was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk. The victim’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of family members.
The initial collision involved a 2019 Nissan Rogue driven by 36-year-old Alexandra Diehl, who struck the pedestrian and fled the scene. The Kia’s driver remained at the scene and cooperated fully with law enforcement.
Emergency responders transported the pedestrian to Sutter Coast Hospital in critical condition. Despite efforts to save the individual, they succumbed to their injuries shortly after 9 p.m. that evening.
Authorities swiftly located the Nissan Rogue at around 8:35 p.m., identifying Diehl as the driver responsible for the hit-and-run. She was arrested and charged with felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter.
The incident highlights the dangers of pedestrian traffic in the area and the severe consequences of fleeing the scene of an accident. CHP is continuing its investigation and has urged anyone with additional information to contact their Crescent City office at (707) 218-2000.
