RED LAKE, MN — A devastating collision on Wednesday claimed the lives of two individuals, including 35-year-old Red Lake tribal police officer Jesse Branch and 37-year-old Alan Lussier Jr. The crash occurred on Highway 1, east of the Red Lake community, though details about the incident are still under investigation.
In honor of Officer Branch’s dedicated service, Red Lake Tribal Chair Darrell G. Seki Sr. ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at tribal buildings. Branch, a committed law enforcement officer since age 18, began his career as a corrections officer before transitioning to police work. His sister, Tina Garrison, described him as a kind and selfless man who was devoted to helping others. He had been in a relationship for over a year and lovingly treated his girlfriend’s children as his own.
Branch was also passionate about rodeo and horses, having grown up participating in 4-H activities. His dedication extended beyond law enforcement to community service, as he recently joined the North Country First Responders. The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, where he also served on the Sheriff’s Posse, paid tribute by organizing a memorial escort through Beltrami County, recognizing his commitment to public safety and service.
Lussier, the other victim in the crash, was a St. Paul resident visiting family on the reservation for Thanksgiving. His sister, Leighshell Layton, described him as caring, protective, and known for his humor. Lussier, who is survived by six sons, was deeply cherished by his family and friends for his unwavering support and generosity.
The tragic loss of Officer Branch has particularly shaken the Red Lake Nation Police Department, which suffered a similar tragedy in 2021 when Officer Ryan Bialke was killed in the line of duty. The department, still grieving Bialke’s loss, is now mourning another devoted officer taken too soon.
Social media tributes poured in from friends and colleagues, recalling Branch’s pride in his transition from detention officer to police officer and his dedication to the Red Lake Nation. His former coworker, Ashlyn Lyons, highlighted his lifelong commitment to public safety and his infectious passion for service.
As the community continues to grieve, the investigation into the crash remains ongoing. The memories of Jesse Branch and Alan Lussier Jr. serve as lasting reminders of their contributions, love, and dedication to their families and the Red Lake community.
