
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – Authorities have identified Ahmed Basheer Awad, a 20-year-old Westbrook resident, as the suspect in a shooting at the Maine Mall on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. The South Portland Police Department (SPPD) has issued an arrest warrant for Elevated Aggravated Assault, a Class A felony, with additional charges expected as the investigation continues.
The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. inside the food court restroom, where witnesses reported hearing two gunshots before chaos erupted. Shoppers, including families with young children, scrambled for safety as mall security responded to the scene. Surveillance footage captured Awad leaving the mall through the food court entrance moments after the gunfire.
Authorities confirmed that one person was shot and later underwent surgery. Fortunately, the victim is expected to survive. Law enforcement officials have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat, but they have urged anyone who spots Awad to immediately call 911.
